The Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, Samuel Awuku has stated that he believes his life is in danger after his car was broken into Thursday night by some unknown assailants. Mr. Awuku said two gun-wielding men burgled his car while he was taking a drink in a restaurant and made away with a laptop computer and party documents. Mr. Awuku told Joy News after the incident that he will seek police protection even though he cannot trust the state security officials. "I think the party is also big enough to offer some of us protection, especially in this difficult moment and I have no doubt in my mind that the NPP can, on its own, protect its own people,” he stated. He said it was difficult to trust any security detail from the state as there was no way to verify whether the person selected to protect one actually has one's best interest at heart. Impugning ill motives into the attack, Mr Awuku said "I suspect foul play. Quite clearly I do. I wonder what armed robbers will do with a press statement if they are indeed armed robbers and I wonder what business armed robbers will also have with your pen drive and all that and documents.” Asked whether he thought it was orchestrated by elements within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Awuku said “I think I need to be quite cautious about that, where I link the whole NDC as a political party. That will be unfair, but quite clearly people who strongly are not in support and do not subscribe to the positions that I share or my party represents [are behind the attack].” He however said this could be the work of extremists who believe that the views of the minority should be suppressed in the interest of the majority.
