Joy FM with the help of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the police, has rescued a six-year old boy repeatedly confined by his parents in a compound house at Zodiac in Dansoman, Accra. Six-year-old Shadrack was locked up in a room whenever his parents had to leave home. His father, Frank Ocran, a car dealer is also said to have been physically assaulting the little boy. Shadrack was however rescued on Thursday. This was when Joy FM’s Anna Agyepong led officials from DOVVSU to the room where the little boy had been kept. This case follows another incident early on this week in Cape Coast where a woman constantly locked up her twin daughters to pursue her trading activities. Chief Inspector Irene Oppong of DOVVSU told Joy News little Shadrack would be taken to a shelter and given some professional attention while investigations continue. Social Worker Alexis Derry who also spoke to Joy News on Friday said he is not surprised at the recent cases of child molestation by parents as it has been going on for sometime now. He commended the media and some NGOs for working to bring the issues to the fore because he believes this has saved the lives of many of such children. He said in order to check some of these issues, the state must adequately resource the social welfare departments in the country so they will have the capacity to deal with such cases in collaboration with the DOVVSU.
