An aide to the former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings who was picked up and detained for three days without any charge has told Joys News he is now indoors for fear of his life.
George Boateng, a clearing agent, was picked up at gunpoint last Friday and detained for three days without charge. “When I was picked [up] I was told that I was a threat to national security, and I was a threat to the president and that instructions had been given from above that I should be arrested. That is what happened,” he said.
He said he was picked up at the Aviance Cargo Village at the airport and took to Cantonments Police Station and dumped him the police cells there.
Narrating his ordeal, Mr Boateng claimed he was denied food and visitors including his relations.
He said but for a concerned police officer who assisted him to contact Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings he would not have been released.
Mr Boateng said immediately the former first lady was notified they sent former President Rawlings’ driver to come see him.
In about anhour’s time, “some of the national security people came in there and said they wanted to release me.”
The Greater Accra regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashitey has confirmed the story but says it’s an isolated incident and should not create panic within the party.
“My intervention was that well if there is no substantial charge against him then he must released,” the minister said.
He rejected suggestions George Boateng was arrested because of his association with the former first lady.
