The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) at the KNUST are agitating reductions in their salaries and allowances following their migration unto the single spine salary structure. They are angry payment of the September 2011 salaries failed to meet their expectations. TEWU has in recent times complained about the slow pace of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in the implementation of their migration process. Members however say they are worse off with the new pay placements, stating lapses recorded in their play slips are unacceptable. Local Union Chairman, Paul Manu, says there are wide disparities in what the workers were taking before the SSSS. “For instance somebody was earning about Gh¢200.00 a month, now when this single spine came, the person is now earning about Gh¢150.00. So many reductions so they don’t understand”, he stated, adding that “the allowances that they said they’re going to consolidate, now if they compare the salary this time [September] with the August one, we can’t see the difference”. Mr. Manu told Luv Fm the anomalies should be corrected as early as possible to ensure industrial harmony. The Union is expected to meet with the Finance Officer at the KNUST on possible ways to correct the anomalies.
