The president Nana Akufo-Addo has visited the site on which a vibrant army officer was lynched by some ruthless residents of Denkyira Obuasi now referred to as New Obuasi.

In the last sound of the bugle, a short ceremony in honour of Major Maxwell Mahama, the president observed moments of silence in the company of army officers, some of whom blew the trumpet for the fallen hero.

The ceremony was conducted on the site where the army officer was clubbed and stoned to death in May 29, 2017 on a suspicion that he was a thief. 

The blast of the trumpet was symbolic. A signal that a hero had fallen. He fell on duty to the nation and in the most inhumane manner. His death was at time a blot on the conscience of the people Denkyira Obuasi. Suspects have been arrested; others are on the run. The community lived on the edge and became victims to taunts, chants from other citizens who could not bear to imagine how a community, will in unison, commit such an atrocious act.

The president had a duty to restore some pride to the community and lift the spirits of those peace loving residents who were not part of the savage act but whom have been humilitated by the conduct of the ruthless few.

President Nana Akufo-Addo the community and promised them of full government support despite the guilt and shame hanging around the community.

The president told the residents that never again must they allow an incident like that to happen.

He was heartbroken that an incident like that will happen under his watch as president.

The community has taken steps, both traditional and Christian to cleanse itself and to ensure the spirit of the fallen soldier rests in peace.

Already the community has changed its name from Denkyira Obuasi to New Obuasi as part of efforts to close the insidious chapter about the community.

President Akufo-Addo said his government will make available to the New Obuasi resident all policies that is intended for citizens of Ghana.

They will not be treated as orphans, he urged.

According to him, the free SHS policy, the planting for food and jobs and all other government policies will be made available to the residents.

The president was however quick to add, that the suspects who are in custody and those on the run will be dealt with according to the law.

As part of his tour of the Western Region, the president made a stopover at Denkyira Obuasi where an army officer was lynched by residents in a bizarre, heart wrenching manner.
