Ghanaian musicians, led by the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Bice Osei Kuffour on Wednesday embarked on a tolerance walk from the MUSIGHA office to the Independence Square in Accra.
The walk dubbed the 'MUSIGA Tolerance Walk' was originally to start from the Independence square to Parliament house but could not start due to Security constraints.
However members of MUSIGA, the media and stakeholders in the industry converged at the MUSIGA head Office to discuss a better way of going around it without any problems where President Obour, in the company of Okyeame Kwame, Rev. Yawson, Rex Omar, and Mary Ghansah preceded to the Parliament house to present a petition to the leadership of Parliament.
They were received by Mr Ambrose Derry and Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Edward Doe Adjaho and the clerk of Parliament.
Speaking to Some Members of Parliament, Obour noted that the Union was there to petition the legislature to join in the campaign against intolerance and to facilitate the process needed for the nation to officially celebrate 16th November each year as National Day of Tolerance.
He added that the call has become more relevant as 2012 is another election year in Ghana and Ghanaians owe it as a duty to ensure that we live in peace before during and after the 2012 elections.
The campaign was launched on November 3rd in Accra to organize a series of events across the country over the next year to sustain awareness amongst Ghanaians and to engender attitudinal changes needed to ensure that tolerance is culturally enshrined in all Ghanaians.
The general theme for the campaign is “Put Ghana First”; where, PUT, used as an acronym simple means Peace, Unity and Tolerance.
Deputy Minority Leader Ambrose Derry congratulated Obour and his administration for the step they have taken.
He noted that in Parliament, 98% of the job they do is based on consensus and urged the Obour administration to help the whole world to know how much they agree more than how much they disagree.
Deputy Majority Leader Abdul–Rashid Pelpuo expressed excitement at the demonstration of commitment, peace and tolerance shown by the musicians in the country.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho who received the petition on behalf of the Speaker, assured the Union that they will sit with the leadership of the house to see how far they can go to support the initiative.
