A 34-year-old Pastor, Jonas Mensah is in the grips of the Weija Police for physically assaulting a 70-year-old woman he alleged is a witch.
Jonas Mensah is said to have claimed that the victim was beaten on the instruction of the Holy Spirit which came upon a 17-year-old boy in his church; that the victim was a witch and had to be disciplined so she could be exorcised of the witchcraft.
Weija District Police Commander, ASP Kwame Gyasi Afari who confirmed the story told Adom News Pastor Jonas Mensah, whose church’s name is being withheld for security reasons, is in police custody at Weija pending further investigations.
According to ASP Afari, Pastor Mensah said he did not touch the 70-year-woman, adding it was the 17-year-old boy who hit her upon the Holy Spirit’s instruction.
Pastor Jonas Mensah, according to family members of the victim, beat up the woman to the extent that she could not speak while her face was swollen with blood oozing from both of her eyes.
A relative of the victim said last Friday, one Yaw, a son of the victim, approached his mother and convinced her to accompany him to the church, situated at an area on the Kasoa road called Block Factory only for her to be beaten mercilessly by Pastor Mensah who claimed she was a witch.
A complaint was lodged with the police at Mamfe in the Eastern Region and she was given a medical form to go to the hospital.
The victim was admitted at the Tetteh-Quarshie Memorial Hospital for two days.
Pastor Mensah, according to police, will be put before court soon.
