A 15-year girl who was rescued from an attempted forced marriage last year has reunited with her family and says she is very happy to have escaped the marriage. A timely intervention of a combined team of Police CID and officials of the Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU) led to the rescue of Sherifatu Yahya from forced-marriage following a Joy FM report. Sherifatu would have become the third wife of a man old enough to be her father. Her mother, Hamzatu Hasim Yahya was arrested while Sherifatu was placed under protection by the Department of Social Welfare. Hamzatu was later released. Joy FM’s Jefferson Sackey, who broke the story, returned to Sherifatu’s home at Sowutuom Friday and reported she was doing well. Sherifatu told Jefferson in an interview that although she disliked her parent’s attempt to get her married, she had apologised to her mother for the arrest and subsequent shame the police action brought upon her. Sherifatu asked her mum for forgiveness and revealed her mother had started drawing close to her again. Sherifa dreams of completing her apprenticeship at the Hands Made of Divine Redeemer Sowing Centre, open her own shop and train others to be like her. “When I leave here [the sowing centre] I will open container, I will still sow and I will get apprentice and teach them how to sow,” the 15-year-old girl said. She said she will never ignore her parents when she decides to get married in future.
