Henry Ani-Obeng, former manager of the Abokobi Rural Bank, located at Madina, is allegedly on the run.
He is wanted by the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for an alleged fraud.
He is said to have instructed an official of the bank to give cheques with the face value of ¢41 million to two men who did not have an account with the bank.
Inspector Joseph Darkwa, Public Relations Officer of the CID, said on July 12, an official of the bank informed the police that between December 16 and 18, 2006, Mr Ani-Obeng allegedly instructed him to issue the cheques to the two.
The police said, although the official initially refused to comply, so much pressure was put on him by his manager that he eventually yielded.
The two men, Baffuor Ayeh Kwapong, manager of Ako Waste Management and Samuel Abban, formerly of AFDA Waste Management Limited, according to the police later cashed the cheque at the Prudential Bank in Accra.
According to the police the bank official said that since the incident, he had been weighed down with guilt and decided to report the case to the police.
Inspector Darkwa noted that the two AFDA managers were subsequently arrested but were granted bail while investigations, including the hunt for Mr Ani-Obeng, continue.
Inspector Darkwa said police enquiry at the bank, revealed that Mr Ani-Obeng has been dismissed from office for similar misconduct.
