Police Inspector Kaakyire Anane, Station Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) in Sunyani, has cautioned police officials against seizing the licences and ignition keys of offending drivers but to process them for court.
Giving the warning in an interview,Inspector Kaakyire said the conduct of some of the officers did not only tarnish the image of the police but also denied the drivers their livelihood.
He expressed his concern about the activities of some of his men, whom he said had taken the law into their hands by seizing the licences of offending drivers and asking them to come to their residences for it.
"As a result of this, some of the drivers are operating without licences or are holding fake ones", the MTTU boss said, adding that, from May to September this year, 83 drivers had reported to the police that their licences were missing or seized by police personnel.
Inspector Anane said to know the true identification of those who claim their licenses were missing, the police would request for a passport, voter identification card or the municipal health insurance card from any driver who came to the station for a police extract.
