The Winneba District Police Command has expressed its concern about the alarming rate at which beaches in and around Winneba are being degraded by sand winners. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Winneba on Wednesday, ASP Jordan Quaye, Winneba District Police Commander warned builders, truck drivers, contractors and hired labourers involved in sand winning in the area to stop the practice and report themselves to the District Assembly. He mentioned Sankor, Yepemso and Mackjoy as some of the areas where the activities are taking place. The Police commander said apart from destroying the beautiful coastline of the beaches and causing an environmental hazard, sand winning also creates room for sea erosion. He said police patrols would be detailed to ensure sanity in the affected areas from now on, and urged community leaders and chiefs to cooperate with the police to stop the practice. ASP Quaye also warned that it was an offence to pollute gutters and beaches or any public place. He said littering polythene bags on streets and public places or any form of rubbish is also an offence punishable by the District Assembly. The Police commander appealed to landlords and institutions to provide toilet facilities, dustbins, boilers and garbage cans to prevent outbreak of diseases. Source: GNA
