The Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong Traditional Area is calling for improved remuneration for teachers and other education workers. Daasebre Osei Bonsu II acknowledges government efforts in that direction but insists more needs to be done to raise standards. He was speaking at the launch of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School. Daasebre Osei Bonsu paid tribute to teachers who have made sacrifices under very trying conditions to lift high the education flag. He observed that it is in the light of such concern that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II instituted an award scheme for rural teachers. The 50th anniversary was launched amidst pomp and pageantry. Witnessed by high powered retinue of traditional leaders including Mamponghene, the occupant of the Silver Stool of Ashanti, son of Asantehene Akyempimhene Oheneba Adusei Poku, MP for Bantama Cecilia Abenaa Dapaah, heads of second cycle schools, old girls etc, the ceremony also witnessed a champagne popping session. Daasebre Osei Bonsu hinted that another reward package for selected heads of educational institutions was on the cards for selfless service. He also challenged teachers to reciprocate such gestures by government and other stakeholders by giving of their best. Headmistress of the Kumasi Girls High School, Mary Krah-Ampofo, appealed for public support to improve infrastructure and other facilities. She also commended teachers and staff of the school; MP for Bantama Cecilia Abenaa Dapaah for donating 300 bags of cement; Chief Executive of Kumasi, Samuel Sarpong for his immense contribution as well as the Australian Embassy for computer donations. Established in 1963 with 20 students, the school presently has a population of 2,400 with the attendant pressure on existing facilities. A year-long programme of activities will mark the 50th anniversary celebrations which would be climaxed in March 2013, sponsored by Coca-Cola and Century Mineral Water among others.
