The New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Manhyia, Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Thursday called for the summoning of Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan before Parliament to address questions over the recent biometric registration exercise.
According to the Manhyia MP, there have been calls on the EC by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to register Ghanaians residing in diplomatic embassies and missions, Ghanaian students abroad and that there was the need for the EC Chairman to appear before the House to spell out the modalities involved in those actions.
Matthew Opoku Prempeh also raised concerns over the registration of prisoners by the EC which he says is in a limbo.
He further stated that the EC must answer questions over the purported continuation of the biometric registration exercise for Ghanaians who have arrived from abroad.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also accused the Ministry of Finance of failing to release funds to the EC which has culminated in some of the vendors and registration assistants of the just ended registration exercise being owed allowances for the past two months.
He intimated that the inability of the Ministry of Finance to release funds to the EC is stalling the operation of the EC making it impossible for them to display the provisional voters’s register.
