Members of Northern Regional Security Council (RESEC) Saturday embarked on a fact finding mission in the conflict zone of Bunkrugu-Yunyoo District. The visit also afforded RESEC opportunity to assess security situation and damage caused by the recent clashes between the Kokombas and Bemobas in the area. The conflict which was triggered by land disputes claimed three lives, leaving six wounded. Lead by the Chairman, Mr. Moses Bukari Mabenba, RESEC members after security briefing by the Bunkurugu-Yunyoo and East Mamprusi District Security Councils at Gambaga, moved to the palace of the King of Mamprugu, Nayiri-Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga at Nalerigu. Nayiri-Naa Abdulai Sheriga told RESEC the underlying factors of the conflict are land and chieftaincy disputes. He explained efforts are being made to resolve the issue. Mr Moses Mabenba said government cannot interfere in land and chieftaincy issues because they are purely traditional matters and believes Nayiri has the powers to resolve the issues amicably. He was however worried some people sought to implicate him in the matter, painting the picture that he (the minister) and members of RESEC were not concerned. The Northern Regional Minister said the security personnel will remain in the area for a while until things return to normalcy. The Acting Army Commander for the Northern Command, Brigadier-General Martin Ahiaglo maintained that war is never a solution to any problem. “No matter how long wars are, to have a lasting peace there is always a requirement for those involved in the war to sit down and talk,” he observed. During the tour, it was noted, disturbingly, is that the people of Kpemile, especially women and children are still taking refuge in the bush in spite of the security presence in the area. The women, guarded by their husbands, only come to the community to fetch water and go back. Meanwhile, the first consignment of relief items from NADMO has arrived for distribution.
