Emmanuel Teye Ofori, Deputy General Secretary of Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) has appealed to government to provide the needed support to the fair wages and salaries commission to succeed.
He noted that the commission would put the entire salary structure on a single spine for public sector employees.
Mr Ofori made the appeal when addressing the Western Regional delegate's conference of PSWU at Takoradi on Thursday.
One hundred and sixty-five delegates are attending the conference.
He said: "The need for a realistic pay for public servants has been identified but successive governments were not willing to implement the right wage policy."
However, Mr Ofori said the rights of the Ghanaian worker to bargain should not be taken away by the Commission.
He called on government and Bank of Ghana (BoG) to explain their intentions on the sale of 48 per cent Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) shares to ease the increasing tension among farmers, workers and a section of society over the alleged sale of the shares to Stanbic bank.
Mr Ofori said PSWU would focus on charting a new and better outlook and offer relevant skills training and education for members.
Mr Ellis Ankomah, Western Regional Chairman of the union said seven new branches had been formed and would be inaugurated soon.
He said education was a vital tool for members and urged them to study the union's constitution and be abreast with current issues.
Mr Samuel Gharbin, Western Regional Industrial Relations Officer (IRO), presenting a report on their activities over the past four years called on members to uphold and promote the role of the union in society.
