Work is set to begin on the construction of Ghana’s second Islamic University College in the last quarter of this year.
The school, to be sited on the Lake Bosomtwe Road in Kumasi, will be the first by indigenous Ghanaian Muslims after the Iranian-sponsored institution in Accra.
The Ghana Muslim Mission which is initiating the project says it has already secured land and an initial amount of Gh₵150,000 for the project.
National Deputy Secretary, Musa Kofi Nuamah, says the proposed university will complement 139 basic and two second-cycle schools of the Mission.
“Religious organizations are playing their role in the development of education in this country so it has dawn on the Muslim Unit to also contribute their quota in that regards and this is the aim of the Mission. But the school will not be particularly for Muslims because we are in Ghana and that all bodies should come to a fusion so it will admit every sort of person within and outside this country”, he stated.
Mr. Nuamah was speaking at the inauguration of the Jamasi Zongo Students Association in the Ashanti Region.
The newly-formed student body brings together educated sons and daughters of the Jamasi Zongo to spearhead social development in the community.
Dr. Badaru Iddrisu, Chief Patron of the association noted that “formerly it was difficult to get people in the Zongo Communities embracing education but now it is no more; so with the unity we are fostering now it will help eradicate the misconception Muslims have about being educated and also avail ourselves as mentors to the youth and this will help uplift the image of Islam”.
