The illegal Chinese mine in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region that became the subject of a violent confrontation between residents and its Chinese operators has been shut down.
The Chinese miners wielding several pump action guns, fired shots in a desperate attempt to ward off an angry crowd of residents that besieged the mine last month.
The residents say they were forced to take action because the miners’ activities had caused massive destruction to their lands.
District Police Commander for Amansie West, Stephen Kwakye says his outfit is maintaining a well-armed team at the shutdown mine.
A number of the illegal Chinese miners arrested in the wake of the confrontation have been set to Accra as investigation continues.
