The Police administration has warned it would not shield any security officer found for misconduct.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyening, says the police administration through its intelligence-led measures, will arrest officers of security agencies found to be hiding-behind uniforms to perpetuate crime against civilians.
The warning comes following the arrest of eight security officers who face interdiction and prosecution and their civilian accomplices, for acts of robbery against small-scale miners.
The five military and three police personnel attacked their victims at gun-point in broad day light, and looted their premises of gold dust, cash and mobile phones.
The suspects had been carrying out their nefarious activities in the Amansie West and Central,Asante Akim North and Atwima Nwabiagya Districts of Ashanti.
They undertook similar attacks in parts of the Central Region.
The police personnel have been identified as Constables Mutala Musah and Bismark Ntow of the Buffalo Unit and the Zongo Police Station respectively.
The third is Stephen Nsoh, a Community Policing Assistant at the Central Police Station.
The soldiers are Lance Corporal Bombadier Frimpong of the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho, Lance Corporals Farouk and Tommy of the Fourth Battalion of Infantry in Kumasi.
The rest are Privates Ahmed Ridwan and Naser Gideon of the Tamale Airbone Unit.
The regional command prior to their arrest, was bombarded with reports of the nefarious activities of the anti-security officers.
The command in its efforts tried some operational methods to clampdown on their activities.
“We decided that, ok, let’s try some operational methods to see if we can get some of them arrested to actually prove yes they are from our ranks and from the ranks of the soldiers”, DCOP Gyening said.
The four soldiers and their civilian accomplices on July 26 conspired and stole quantity of sacks containing sand believed to be rich in gold from small scale miners at Banka near Konongo, but they were arrested while carting their booty into a Kia truck.
A pump action gun, mobile phones and unspecified amount of money were retrieved from them.
Small-scale miners at Denkyira Nyinawusu, Fahiakobo, Freeman Gold Mines at Jacobu and Banka are some of the victims.
DCOP Gyenning served notice, police will not just name and shame criminal elements, but they will be prosecuted.
“One of the measures is what we are doing today; naming and shaming. If you know that if we get you we will not hide you, you will think twice”.
