A collaboration between anti-drug agencies in West Africa has led to the seizure of more than seven million kilogrammes of narcotics.
The ECOWAS-Interpol operation was carried out simultaneously in Ghana, Benin and Togo. A communiqué released by ECOWAS says the operation is part of moves to rid the sub region of illicit drugs.
In a week-long capacity building training-cum-operational activities in Benin, Togo and Ghana, Law enforcement officers from agencies responsible for drug investigations in the three ECOWAS countries arrested 74 drug traffickers with 7,894,275 kg of quantities of different drugs seized.
The arrest and seizures were made in three days of operations from 26th to 28th July in Togo, Benin and Ghana.
The operation, code-named “ATAKORA”, particularly focused on drug trafficking at airports, sea ports and land borders in the three countries by engaging 36 investigators and law enforcements officers in the respective countries.
The breakdown of the seizures shows 7,493,600 kg for Togo with Benin accounting for 376,675 kg of drugs and 24 kg for Ghana.
The operation was aimed at detecting and dismantling criminal organized networks using West Africa to traffic cocaine, heroin, cannabis and psychotropic substances.
