The controversial Constitutional Instrument (CI) 73 creating 45 additional constituencies has been withdrawn in the face of intensive divisive debates.
The CI has been replaced with an amended CI. It will mature in 21 sitting days.
Withdrawing the CI 73, Majority Leader Cletus Avoka told MPs the decision to withdraw the law, which was due to mature today, was based on an assurance by the Electoral Commission (EC) at a meeting Tuesday that the tabling of an amended CI which will mature in 21 sitting days, would not adversely affect the creation of the constituencies.
He said he asked the permission of the Speaker of the House, Mrs Joyce Bamford-Addo to recall Parliament, due to go on recess, to allow for the 21 days for the legislation to mature.
Joy News’ Sammy Darko reported the Minority were visibly unhappy when Mr Avoka announced that he may recall the House over the matter.
