The Electoral Commission says it is ready to answer in court any challenges to its creation of 45 new constituencies.
This follows a fresh suit brought against the commission on the matter by one James Amarh Martey.
Former Attorney General, Ayikoi Otoo who is representing the plaintiff is petitioning the Supreme Court to declare as null and void the electoral areas backing the creation of the new constituencies.
He told Joy News that the Constitutional Instrument (CI73) placed before Parliament by the EC clearly indicated that the creation of the constituencies is partly based on the newly created districts and electoral areas.
He argued that the Local Government Minister overstepped his powers guaranteed by the constitution when he laid before Parliament Legislative Instrument 1983 creating the districts and the electoral areas.
Mr Ayikoi Otoo insisted that relying on electoral areas, created by a minister who had no legal authority to do so, to create the new constituencies was wrong in law.
But the Electoral Commission disagreed.
The Acting Director of Public Affairs at the EC, Christian Owusu-Parry said Mr Ayikoi Otoo’s arguments were based on ignorance.
He said the EC does not create districts and that the plaintiff’s case may have been misdirected.
“Electoral areas are part of the district assembly structure and the law requires that the members of every district assembly must represent a certain electoral area within the district assembly and so we divide the district into electoral areas.
"He has a right to go to court if he doesn’t understand anything,” Mr Owusu-Parry stated.
