The Communications Manager for Newmont Ghana Gold Limited at Ahafo Mining Project in the Brong Ahafo Region, Agbeko Kwame Azumah has assured the company’s readiness to ensure a regime free of cyanide spillage.
Agbeko Kwame Azumah emphasised, the company will continue to embark on safe and responsible mining activities that will not cause adverse impact on the environment, most especially spillage of cyanide.
Cyanide is which is known to be poisonous is considered as the best option to mercury by mining firms worldwide, but the user must comply with best practices.
Speaking in an interview with Adom news during the tour of the Parliamentary Press Corps to the Newmont Ahafo mining project, the Mr. Azumah declared that the company will continue to ensure best practices in the use of cyanide in gold extraction.
He however said in the event that a spillage occursed accidentally, the company has the system and expertise in place to reduce its negative impact and also minimise the risk.
The Communication Manager for the Ahafo Project said currently, the company has voluntarily signed on to the International Cyanide Management Code Initiative to ensure the highest standard in the use and management of cyanide by mining companies.
He said Newmont will continue to attain the highest standards as much as possible to retain the certification, adding that, every two years the organisation embarks on auditing to check the cyanide management level of respective mining firms.
