Deputy Energy Minister Alhaji Inusah Fuseini announced Tuesday that the recent fuel shortage would be over within 6 days, adding that he cannot yet give an estimate for when the current wave of load shedding will end.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Tuesday, the minister said that a mechanical malfunction at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), which has interfered with operations there for weeks, was just remedied. He anticipated that the backlog of work should be cleared in 6 days, at which point the plant will resume putting out oil.
Fuseini noted that the Ministry of Energy had also received approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use the Takoradi Harbor as a loading point for trucks to collect fuel, which they will deliver around the Western, Central, and Ashanti regions to address the present shortages there.
He had less insight into the prospects of getting the Sunon Asogli plant back to work because its operation depend on the supply of gas from the West African Gas Pipeline.
The Pipleline was damaged a week ago, ostensibly by a ship fleeing the Togolese Navy, Fuseini said, and mentioned he will know more about the situation when a team, which is due to arrive in Lome today, completes its diagnosis of the extent of damage.
He added that given the immediate shortage of gas, certain power plants in Takoradi were being updated to run on crude as part of efforts to address power shortages.
Barring any mechanical malfunctions, he declared, these plants will be operational within a week.
