Headmistress of Wesley Girls Senior High School in Cape Coast is calling for urgent review of Ghana’s education policy to give more prominence to moral training. Betty Abena Dkokoto says the present system which skews human and child rights at the expense of morality, should be addressed. She foresees a gloomy future if no steps are taken to check crime and other acts of indiscipline especially through technology abuse. Mrs. Djokoto was speaking at a staff development retreat at Ejisu in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region. She laments, unlike in the past education authorities now face serious impediments instilling the highest form of discipline in students. According to Mrs. Djokoto, even measures by teachers on personal hygiene are being questioned on the grounds of students’ right to privacy. Mrs. Djokoto fears the country risks producing un-useful citizens due to over-emphasis on academic development with little or no personal and national values. “It has become increasingly clear that the outcomes of our educational system leave much to be desired. Unfortunately our skewed understanding of child rights and other human rights is preventing schools from what we used to do best-inculcating discipline”. The annual staff development retreat reviews and examines performance of teachers over the period. The theme for this year is, ‘’Education as a Transformational Tool; the Role of the Teacher’’. Mrs. Awura Abena Djokoto questions why discipline is being sacrificed for the sake of child rights. “Inspection of teeth, hand, armpit, clothing, etc. is being questioned because the child has right to privacy”. Protestant Chaplain at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology decries what he says is failure of the education system. Very Reverend Paul Boafo says the situation has resulted in institutions becoming breeding grounds for social vices. "The students have become so sophisticated and uncontrollable for reform", he said.
