A rare show of bravery displayed by a young woman last Thursday, October 4, led to the arrest of two suspected hardened criminals in the Kumasi Metropolis.
At about 9am that day, the woman arrived in Kumasi from Obuasi and alighted at Santasi roundabout to continue her journey to Kwadaso.
While waiting for another car, an Astra taxi occupied by two men besides the driver, drove close to her and enquired where she was going.
When she told them she was going to Kwadaso but did not know the place, they said they would take her there.
However, on reaching Patasi, they asked her to get down but the back doors of the cab were locked.
As she struggled with the door, one of the men who was with her in the back seat picked her mobile phone and a cash of GH¢100 (¢1 million) from her purse which she had placed on the seat.
Eventually, she opened the door, but before she got down she looked into her purse and found that her mobile phone and the money were gone.
Suspicious, she confronted the man, held him by the shirt and dragged him out of the car, while administering hefty slaps to his face.
Realizing the danger, the suspects handed the money and the mobile phone back to her.
Meanwhile, another taxi driver driving past, drove closer and enquired from the woman what the trouble was as the robbers sped off.
Peter Bese, the other driver, asked the woman to join him in his cab and they gave the robbers a chase. They eventually got two of the robbers, Agyemang and Opoku, while the third, Kay, escaped.
Confirming the story to the Times, Police Inspector Yusif Tanko of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, said the suspects will be arraigned before court to answer robbery charges.
