The Ghana Conference on Religion and Peace (GCRP) has appealed to public-spirited Ghanaians to ensure peace and stability in the country as the 2012 draws close.
It said the group was taking steps to contribute to efforts by other interest groups to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections in Ghana.
A statement signed by its chairperson, Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, who is also the President, Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference, and issued in Accra said it had already held informative and fruitful discussions with the Electoral Commission (EC) on the pertinent issue of the creation of 45 additional constituencies and explored the way forward.
It said the group intended to meet the leadership of the various political parties for further discussions to decide on the road map that would benefit the country.
It said the group would get back to the public after its engagement with the political parties.
It, therefore, called on “all public spirited Ghanaians, the religious community and civil society to support with prayer all efforts at ensuring peace and stability in our dear country".
Giving a background on the group, it said it comprised Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches, the Federation of Muslim Councils, the Office of the National Chief Imam, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, the Council of Independent Churches and the Eminent Persons Group of the Christian Council of Ghana, along with other stakeholders.
The statement said the group's desire was to work for a peaceful society in line with the role of religious leaders in promoting and sustaining peace.
