Two policemen who allegedly shirked their responsibility of effecting the arrest of three suspected cocaine couriers and instead provided them escort from the Western Region to Accra have been arrested.
The two, Corporal Patrick Agbezudoh and Constable Michael Atitsogbui of the Armour Car Squad Unit of the Ghana Police Service, were busted at the Apremdo Barrier on Tuesday afternoon in the company of the suspected couriers.
The three couriers were named as Alex Edwards, John Toku-Agyeman and Steven Osei, alias Nana Osei-Boateng.
Police sources told the Daily Graphic that the suspicion of police officers on duty was aroused when the group arrived at the barrier escorted by the policemen who were fully dressed in uniform and acting as if they were on an officially sanctioned duty.
On account of that suspicion, and armed with the knowledge that the two policemen were not stationed in the region, the duty policemen decided to conduct a search on the two vehicles, with registration numbers GE 5209 V and WR 1448 X respectively, which the two policemen and the suspected couriers were using.
The search yielded parcels of a substance suspected to be cocaine and a substantial sum of money, the exact amount of which the police declined to disclose.
Constable Atitsogbui was said to have taken to his heels when they were confronted but he later surrendered himself to the police because he was in an unfamiliar terrain and could, therefore, not find his way out.
Sources told the Daily Graphic that upon interrogation by their superior officers at the police station, the two policemen were reported to have broken down and allegedly confessed to the crime.
When the Daily Graphic contacted the Western Regional Police Commander, Mr R.M. Azu, he confirmed the arrest of the five people, including the two policemen.
He said further investigations were being conducted and that until they were concluded, he would not make any further comment.
Meanwhile, the Director-General in charge of Police Operations, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Patrick Timbilla, has told the Daily Graphic in Accra that the police administration would institute a service inquiry against the two police officers beside the criminal investigations.
He said the Service had sent a strong signal to all personnel to desist from such criminal activities or have themselves to blame.
