Seven people were killed at Assin Manso in the early hours of Monday when a 207 Mercedes Benz bus with registration number AS 2030 F, from Yeji in the Brong Ahafo Region, travelling to Apam in the Central Region, collided with an articulated truck. The truck with registration number GS 5780-10 was coming from Takoradi heading towards Assin Faso in the Central Region. The dead persons, six males and a female included the mate of the articulated truck and the driver of the Benz bus.The bodies have since been deposited at the St. Francis Hospital morgue for autopsy while seven other victims whose conditions were critical were sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi. It took the intervention of the Fire Service (FS) personnel to cut open the articulated truck to remove the body of the mate.Seventeen other victims were also admitted at the St. Francis Hospital. The accident spot is noted for many accidents on the Assin Foso road, with the latest accident bringing to five the number of fatal accidents recorded on that stretch of road this year.
Briefing Daily Guide, the Central Regional Manager of the Road Safety Commission (RSC), Stephen Anokye, said the accident happened around 5:30am.
Mr. Anokye stated that the articulated truck driver wanted to avoid a pothole on his lane while the Benz bus also tried to divert to the truck's lane, leading the collision.
He disclosed that the impact suggested that both vehicles were speeding.
Mr Anokye hinted that the Benz bus was old and over-loaded.
