The Ghana Center for Entrepreneurship, Employment and Innovation is as a matter of urgency proposing for the immediate adoption of Career Guidance or otherwise Counseling Units in most schools; Basic, Second Cycle and Tertiary Institutions in Ghana. Drop out-rate, unemployment, lack of proper skills training, barriers in student-teacher relationships in schools and delay in early identification of natural talents of students to the barriers that exist in family’s and barriers in student-teacher relationships, have been identified to an extent, as the root cause of the increase in social vices, The Ghana Education Service says it is mandatory and imperative for every school to have a Career Guidance Unit or Department. Ghana Center for Entrepreneurship, Employment and Innovation in a statement of Tuesday said “we believe the call by us and institutions such as Child-Learner Development Organization (CLEDOR) amongst others for the adoption and setting up of this unit is timely in enhancing our institutional and educational structures”. “Research has shown that schools that have a Counseling Department have succeeded to most extent in breaking down barriers in student-teacher relationships, addressing individual problems of students amongst others ensuring an appropriate growth in the mental and physical being of students, helping to identify their relative talents earlier than has been the case in Ghana. This Unit we believe should even exist in Communities as part of social welfare,” the Center insisted. It noted concerns such as the lack of infrastructure to accommodate such counseling units, inadequate human resource personnel and lack of adequate financing amongst others, as barriers to setting up Counseling Units. “Our research, however into this area shows that there are indeed opportunities to address such gaps, these opportunities include students studying psychology in tertiary schools volunteering to practice in basic schools for the sake of child development. Professionals in the field of psychology can volunteer as well and apportion their time such that, the time table, course structure and educational curriculum of schools allows for a period, where students can visit the desk placed in a vantage point of the school for a session or that these personnel share staff common room with teaching staff and the allowance by school standards for students to visit the Counselor where necessary with strict monitoring by School heads to limit students from taking undue advantage of this provision, this is also an area of job creation. In the area of finance, we believe given that there should be a provision to Counseling Departments by GES standards, it is worrying that such Departments do not exist, again Parent Teacher Associations of schools can develop mechanisms to finance this Unit which should consist of not more than once person subject to institutional differences amongst others, ensuring a total responsibility by parents of their commitment to ensure their wards become better and productive citizens,” it said.. The also called on stakeholders in the education sector; “every school head, P.T.A’s to as a matter of urgency start talks with school heads, boards to start adopting this practice to nurture a great pool of talents with corresponding extra-curricular activities to grow these talents we have”. “For us, we will continue our best to engage Managements, MMDA’s responsible and play a bigger role in advocacy in making sure schools have it. We will start by engaging parents and Heads of Parent Teacher Association while engaging the media and Civil Society Organizations in helping to promote this and hopefully Ghana will see the resurgence of its numerous talents that have been hidden for far too long”.
