Authorities of the Prestea government hospital are calling for the relocation of the facility or the total construction of a befitting modern hospital to solve the health challenges confronting the area. Aside the infrastructural challenges, the hospital facility is over grown with weeds turning the place into a safe haven for reptiles. A report by William Benjamin Peters. The prestea government hospital was constructed in 1929 by the then state gold mine company to cater for the health needs of the workers but was taken over by government following the collapse of the company in 1996. Joynews Western Regional Correspondent, William Benjamin Peters, reports that the hospital is yet to undergo any major renovation or expansion to match the increasing patronage thereby putting pressure on the facility. The hospital caters for the entire Prestea Huni valley district and other adjoining communities. The hospital is situated in a valley which is about 1km from the main Prestea township with patients having to climb a steep hill and travel an untarred road before accessing healthcare. Drivers who ply the route charge as much as 3 Cedis from Prestea Township to the hospital. The hospital is surrounded by bushy valleys which makes expansion difficult even as reptiles from the surrounding bushes invade wards and offices of the hospital. Part of the female ward has been converted into a theater for the hospital while there are only 11 housing units for the 130 staff of the hospital. Prestea Government Hospital has only one doctor who attends to the over 176,000 patients with the support of 6 midwives and 13 nurses with no medical assistants. The administrator of the hospital Felix Osei Kesse in an interview with JOYNEWS appealed for the relocation of the hospital.
