Optometrists who passed out from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Cape Coast Medical Schools since 2010 have still not been employed.This is despite several appeals and interventions by the affected students and the Ghana Optometrist Association.The two batches of trained doctors have all served their one year internship and Joy News has learnt the Ghana Health Service is unable to offer them employment because it has no financial clearance from the Ministry of health.Those affected say the situation is very discouraging. One of them, Dr Richard Donkor shared his frustrations with Joy News:“It’s a very sad story to go through seven years of education and then end up in your house without knowing your future…I feel very depressed, and sometimes we think that we have wasted our time to do such a course.”He claimed there is a budget that is supposed to come from the Ministry of Finance determining the number of optometrists that should be employed but “this budget has been held on for these number of years.”Dr. Donkor wondered why they have not been employed when their services are badly needed in the districts, deploring the over-concentration of optometrists in the major cities – Accra and Kumasi.The Ghana Optometrist Association is very disturbed about the development.Its Secretary, Dr Samuel Aseidu is demanding an immediate response from the appropriate authorities.He is also not pleased with the level at which optometrists are placed on the single spine salary structure; “Salary is a big issue”, he claimed.
