The Tema Station Food Stuff Sellers Welfare Association on Friday appealed to Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Women and Children's Affairs to intervene on their behalf to let the AMA rehabilitate all those who have been affected by the Assembly’s decongestion exercise.
This, according to the Association would help to avoid any negative economic implications that the exercise might have on them, their families and other dependants.
A letter signed by Madam Victoria Mensah, Chairperson of the Association said the failure of the AMA to notify members on the decongestion exercise was a clear manifestation of the Assembly's disregard for the executives and the roles that women play in the society.
"The AMA officials know that the strength of our members are all women, with our executives known to them", the letter said.
According to the Association, the manner in which the goods of the hawkers were destroyed, their sheds pulled down and the place set ablaze was unimaginable and that it was sad that defenceless market women could be treated like that.
The Association said prior to the 50th anniversary celebrations they were given directives by AMA to erect sheds and paint them green, as that was the colour of the AMA, adding that they spent a whooping 35 million cedis for that project and said it was unfortunate that the AMA did not consult them before taking the decision on the eviction.
