An inmate at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital has strangled to death another inmate.Akua Pokua who was admitted only about a week ago at the facility allegedly strangled Charlotte Nyarko with the piece of cloth until she died.Another inmate escaped but remains severely injured in the head.Authorities of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have attributed the death of an inmate as well as the injury of another to unavailability of drugs, insufficient personnel and congestion at the facility.Chief Psychiatrist, Dr. Akwasi Osei in an interview with Joy News said the hospital is facing a lot of challenges which need to be resolved immediately.“If you don’t have enough medicine to control them or top let them improve quite fast then once a while such a situation could arise and that is what happened.“At that ward there are 100 patients, congestion. A ward that is supposed to take 50 patients had 100 patients and we have very few nurses attending to them.He said on the day of the incident, only two nurses were present to take care of 100 patients, a situation, he noted was terrible. The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital pending autopsy while the injured inmate is responding to treatment at the Ridge Hospital. The police have begun investigations into the incident.Meanwhile the suspect has been confined and is been giving special attention at the hospital despite its constraints.
