With about 144,005 confirmed cases of COVID-19 around the world, the coronavirus outbreak has affected every industry globally since its outbreak in January.

Ghana's first two cases were recorded on Thursday, March 12, the Health Minister announced in an emergency press conference.

This announcement has led to the cancellation and suspension of many events and festivities in the country.

Below is the list of everything that has been cancelled or postponed in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Events / Workplaces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) canceled its annual Open Day event in Accra due to what it described as "current operational exigencies."

The Office of the First Lady of Ghana, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, also cancelled the International Women’s Day event scheduled for Friday, March 13, 2020.

United Nation (UN) agencies in Ghana have shut down their offices and asked workers to stay home after it emerged one of the two recorded coronavirus cases in Ghana is their employee.

This was contained in a correspondence from UN authorities in Ghana to their staff on Friday.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also shut down its office in Ghana to test its capacity to manage the coronavirus pandemic.

The IMF has asked its staff in the country not to report to work on Friday but stay home and carry out all their work online or on virtual platforms.

Education

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) also issued a statement on Friday banning all international conferences as part of its efforts to combat the COVID-19.

Management of the school also banned all social gatherings including funerals, sporting activities, awards night, dinners, hall weeks and other outdoor events on campus until further notice.

Ghana International School (GIS) has done same, with an immediate shutdown on Friday.

In a memo to parents and staff of the school, the Principal, Dr Mary Ashun, announced, that the School "will CLOSE at the end of the School Day today, 13th March 2020 at 3:30 pm for the next two weeks till 27th March 2020.”

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has in the wake of the COVID-19 has shut down elevators in a move to prevent the spread of the virus.

Charles Barnor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the institution said, "All lifts have been shut down and we have de-densified all public places on campus."

The University of Ghana has also suspended all public gatherings after two cases of coronavirus was confirmed.

In a press statement, management of the school said its actions were to help limit large internal events as much as possible which would help control the spread of the virus.

Hence, hall week celebrations, all major international and national events set to take place on the university’s campuses have been put on hold until further notice.

Entertainment

Organisers of the 3Music Awards have postponed their upcoming Fan Festival scheduled to be held at the Accra Polo Club on Saturday, March 14, due to the outbreak of Coronavirus in Ghana.

In a statement issued by the CEO of 3Music Awards, Sadiq Abdulai Abu, his institution and partners are prioritizing the safety and well being of its patrons.

Stonebwoy’s American concert has added to the number of shows that have been put on hold due to the spread of the coronavirus.

In a press release, the management team of the artiste revealed that the US government banned all large gatherings in the country after coronavirus was labelled a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Furthermore, the 2020 Adom FM Kolor Paaty, slated for Saturday, March 14, 2020, has been postponed indefinitely due to public safety concerns.

Ministry of Health’s announcement of two confirmed cases compelled management to postpone the event until an appropriate time.
