The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that a nation that cannot take care of its sick population is itself in a state of illness.
He explained that the NDC plans to eliminate fees for students with disabilities from levels 100 to 400, meaning that no physically challenged will pay fees under a future NDC Mahama government.
Additionally, Mr Gyamfi highlighted the "Mahama Cares" initiative, which will support individuals with chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney failure, who currently struggle to afford costly medications.
He emphasized that chronic diseases account for the highest percentage of mortality in the country and that many of these deaths are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Speaking on JoyNews Newsfile, Mr Gyamfi said, "A nation that does not take care of its sick is itself sick. All these chronic diseases account for the highest percentage of mortality. The deaths recorded in this country are not covered by health insurance."
Mr Gyamfi explained that the 'Mahama Cares Initiative' Fund will complement the free primary health care initiative, ensuring that anyone visiting a community clinic, polyclinic, or health centre will receive treatment at no cost, regardless of their health insurance status.
