Ghanaian music producer Appiah Dankwah, widely known in showbiz as Appietus, has paid glowing tribute to the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
According to him, the late music icon was a professional who made music production both easy and inspiring.
Reflecting on their collaborations, Appietus said Lumba stood out for his clear artistic vision and effortless delivery in the studio.
“Daddy Lumba was one artiste who knew exactly what he wanted, so working with him was easy,” Appietus shared. “He was usually ready to go — just a few touches, and he would get the job done.”
The Birth of a Hit: "Tokrom"
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, July 28, Appietus recalled a memorable moment when the Highlife legend turned a studio beat into one of his most celebrated songs.
“I was playing a beat in the studio one day, and he suddenly said, ‘I like this beat — who’s it for?’ I told him I normally make beats and sell to artistes. He said he wanted it, and I gave it to him. He went home, came back, and the next thing you know, we had a banger: ‘Tokrom’.”
The iconic song, he noted, released in the early 2000s, became an instant hit. Lumba’s playful reference in the track — “the tools hardcore already made” — was a nod to Appietus' pre-made beat, a departure from Lumba’s usual approach of crafting melodies first and building the music around them.
“That should tell you the kind of creative genius he was,” Appietus noted. “He told me that was the first time he’d ever worked like that — using an existing beat. And it worked beautifully.”
A Legend Remembered
Describing Daddy Lumba as a gem the nation has truly lost, Appietus praised his unmatched professionalism and musical insight.
“He was professional. He knew what he wanted, so you didn’t have to suffer too much. We’ve really lost a gem.”
Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra. The beloved musician, aged 60, succumbed to a brief illness, leaving a profound void in Ghana’s music scene.
