Abu Gyinapo aide to Nana Akufo-Addo has said the government is not prepared to promote the decision taken by ECOWAS, AU and UN on Ivory Coast. According to him, it is not enough for President Mills to call on Moslems and Christians in the country to pray for peace in Cote d’Ivoire but should boldly call on his good friend Laurent Gbagbo to concede defeat. "God helps those who help themselves and so prayers alone will not be enough we will have to back the prayer with principled action". The trouble in Ivory Coast started after the last month's run-off election, which the Electoral Commission said Mr Alassane Ouattara won by 54%. Laurent Gbagbo, who has been in power since 2000, maintains that he is the winner of last month's runoff vote despite growing international pressure on him to concede defeat. Abu Gyinapo speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, programme noted that even after UN declared that Laurent Gbagbo had lost the elections, President Mills welcome envoy from Ivory Coast sent by President Gbagbo. He added that nothing stops President Mills from taking a principled public position on the issue because his actions is putting the image of the country into public ridicule. "Our president should take a principled position, he should demonstrate the long standing historical position that Ghana has always assumed in the community of nations. He should take decision like what President Nkrumah, President Rawlings and President Kufuor took when it came to international matters." “I want to say in all humility to the President that when you propose as a man and you put in place the right action and measures God will not dispose". Meanwhile the editor of the Daily Dispatch Ben Ephson noted that once Ghana has signed the ECOWAS communiqué which recognised opposition leader Alassane Ouattara as the president-elect of Cote d’Ivoire, it will not make any difference if President Mills does not call on Laurent Gbagbo to step down. "If Ghana goes on its way out to support Gbagbo, Ghanaians in the northern Ivory Coast will be in trouble, to support Ouattara openly Ghanaians in the south will be in trouble.Once we have committed our self we need to be very careful because of the nature of the situation there," he added. He stressed that the stance taken by the government is the best in these circumstances. Story by: Adwoa Gyasiwaa/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
