Chief of Aburi, Otobour Gyan Kwasi II, has re-echoed his call for the government to urgently hand over the Aburi Botanical Gardens to the Aburi Traditional Council. The Aburihene in an interview with Asempa News explained that their demand for West Africa’s largest Botanical Garden is to save it from total collapse, as it is in a very deplorable state. He said 80% of the labour force is from Aburi but because of mismanagement by the Department of Parks and Gardens, most of the workers have lost their jobs due to the authority’s inability to pay their allowances. In response to the chief’s suggestion, the Director of Parks and Gardens Mr. Adams Nantogma said in an interview with Asempa News that it will not be the best decision to hand over the gardens to the traditional council. The country stands the risk of losing the land to investors because the chiefs may decide to sell the lands, he said. According to Mr. Nantogma, authorities have consulted the Ministry Of Local Government to talk with the chiefs to settle the matter amicably. However, he claims it will be appropriate if investors are brought in to help restore the image of the garden. Meanwhile, Mr. Nantogma has refuted the claims that they are unable to pay the workers. He said the workers are on payroll and as such receive their salary adequately from the government every month.
