Recent media reports of some 25 trouble spots identified in the Chereponi constituency of the Northern Region has been found to be untrue ahead of the September 29 bye election in that constituency. The said reports were said to have emanated from a meeting of the Regional Security Council [REGSEC] of the Northern Region; but Police Commander of the region, ACP Awuntobogbe Awuni has told Asempa Today that cannot be true. This is in contrast to information given out by the Northern Regional Minister Stephen Sumani Nanyina who had himself indicated that the REGSEC had indentified those trouble spots. But ACP Awuni says, neither the Police administration in the region nor any other security agency in the region has come across any of such trouble spots and indicated that his outfit is in touch with the various stakeholders involved in the bye election particularly the political parties and gave the assurance the Police have the capacity to quell any security threats.ACP Awuni said the Police administration’s headquarters will be sending in a strong team of police officers to the area to monitor the elections and to stem any unruly behaviour.Currently, about 30 police and military personnel have been stationed on the boarders between Ghana and Togo. The Chereponi constituency bye election has been fixed for September 29 following the death of the Member of Parliament of the area, Madam Doris Seidu. The Chairman of the Northern regional branch of the Electoral Commission, Sylvester Kanyi in an interview earlier with Asempa Today indicated that at the last count, five persons had picked up nomination forms to contest the bye-election with only one of them being a woman.Story by Kwadwo Asare-Baffour Acheampong, Asempa 94.7FM
