The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has called on public sector stakeholders to urgently address farmers' challenges as the country commemorates the 40th National Farmers’ Day.
In a press release, signed by the General Secretary, GAWU called on political parties to prioritize agriculture in their manifestos and propose actionable policies supporting farmers’ welfare.
The Union urged the government to intensify its fight against illegal mining and commit resources to climate-resilient farming practices.
GAWU’s General Secretary, Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, highlighted the problems farmers face, including post-harvest losses, low crop prices, limited access to essential farming inputs, and the intensifying effects of climate change.
The ongoing crisis of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, compounds these issues, degrading arable land, contaminating water sources, and threatening the livelihoods of rural communities.
GAWU’s recommendations included providing farmers with drought-resistant seeds, implementing sustainable land management practices, encouraging integrated pest control, and expanding irrigation systems to help farmers cope with climate-related challenges.
Additionally, GAWU emphasized the need for tighter pesticide regulations to protect both environmental and human health.
The Union also advocated for enhanced occupational safety standards within the agricultural sector and called for greater support for agricultural extension officers.
It underscored the importance of fair treatment, safe working conditions, and better economic opportunities for those who work tirelessly to feed the nation.
With concerted efforts from policymakers, GAWU believes Ghana can secure a more sustainable future for its agricultural sector and rural communities.
