The Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has disclosed that the former Director of the National Signal Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, are yet to be formally charged despite being in custody for several days.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, March 24, Dr. Srem-Sai clarified that while the couple has been cautioned and is assisting with investigations, they have not been officially charged with any crime.

“No, we have not formally charged them yet. We have cautioned them, and they are still helping with the investigations. Very soon, we will put them before the courts and formally charge them,” he stated.

He further explained that the Attorney General's department had been investigating Mr Boahene's case for weeks.

However, the AG refrained from making public statements until they had verified facts and confronted the accused with evidence.

"We appreciate the fact that you cannot put out information of this kind unless you are certain of the facts that you are putting out. Even though most of the things that we put out today, we've had them, we only concluded on some of them after we have arrested the persons involved.

"I've confronted them with some of the facts which they seem to have agreed to. So we found it easy to put them out, because we have heard from the other side of the divide, and certain things have been confirmed," he said.

Mr Adu Boahene was arrested on Thursday night, March 20, when he arrived at Kotoka International Airport from the United Kingdom on a British Airways flight, while his wife was arrested the following day, March 21.

Addressing concerns over their prolonged detention, Deputy A-G stated that they had been granted bail and were only being held because they had yet to meet the bail conditions.

“No, they've been granted a bill. What is happening now is for them to satisfy the bill conditions, and so they are working around the clock. I think a lot has gone on with the bill. So as soon as they satisfy the condition, why not, they would go,” he explained.

The former NSB Director has been accused of embezzling state funds and laundering them through real estate investments, including involvement in a $7 million cyber defence system contract.
