The African Migration Summit is calling for effective implementation of migration policies in the sub-region to achieve its agenda.
Chairperson of Nekotech Center, Rev. Dr. A.K. Ocansey urged government to ratify the International Labour Organization’s convention C189 to promote decent work.
“There are some conventions that we are propagating and what we are saying is that as a country, we want to see Convention C189 which is a decent work for domestic workers and we want to see C190 which is also nonviolence at the work place ratified. And when those are ratified, it will help sanitize the industry and make it safe and orderly."she said.
Migration to Gulf states
Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, Akwasi Awua Ababio said government is in the process of lifting the ban on the recruitment of workers to Gulf countries with the appropriate measures in place.
“I think now we have a lot of information as to how things had gone bad and therefore the necessary work that has to be done at the background has been done to enable those who are genuinely registered, who are also in good business to be able to come back in business.” he said.
He added that the move will ensure that Ghanaians who seek jobs there get decent ones.
On his part, President of the Journalist International Forum for migration, Ajibola Abayomi cautioned journalists to be circumspect with their reportage on migration issues.
“For instance, we must understand and admit that the media needs a lot of the dynamism and concept of migration by bringing a human face to the issue to make it a more human reportage,” he stated.
The summit will be conducted as an annual conference for all stakeholders that are interested in the accelerated development of Africa through migration as well as the advancement and effective implementation of African migration policies, reviewing and providing roadmaps as inputs to policymakers in the African centered establishment of bilateral and multilateral platforms and agreements that benefit the liberation, safety and protection of African Migrants searching for more prosperous lifestyles through decent work overseas.
