Agric Minister, Kwesi Ahwoi has warned government may be compelled to scrap subsidies on fertilizers if stakeholders do not take full responsibility for management of the fertilizer subsidy programme.
It follows several reports some security personnel in the North are allegedly conniving with some unscrupulous persons to smuggle the subsidized fertilizer to neighbouring countries.
DCE for the Sisala West District in the Upper West Region, Moses Dramani Luri says measures introduced by the Assembly to address the situation are not yielding results.
“We have banned the sale and transportation of fertilizer especially in the night but the problem is that we needed the bye-law to be gazetted by parliament before we can act on that” he said.
But Agric Minister, Kwesi Ahwoi also tells Joy Business, it behoves farmers especially to assist in curbing the practice before it takes a negative toll on food production.
“The farmers must stand up and resist because this is their own product. They know and live with the smugglers. So why don’t they report them to the police? If they cannot monitor the subsidy programme lets stop it and go the open market way and see if the farmers can buy the fertilizer to produce the food we need” he noted.
