The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday met with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to explain to them why the party has decided not to accept the results of the 2012 elections and what measures the party is taking to address their grievances. He said “the NPP came to the conclusion after examining evidence available to us, that the results that were put out by the Electoral Commission (EC) are not a true reflection of what actually transpired and that is why we have chosen to challenge in the constitutionally designated forum, the Supreme Court, the results of the December 7 polls.” Nana Addo said it was important that even before that action is taken, certain key organizations in the country are informed directly on why the party is taking that step and “that is why we have called on the TUC this afternoon.” He said “contrary to the propaganda that is being fuelled out there by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the NPP are inviting trouble for our country, we are for the respect of democratic values in an atmosphere of peace and stability and will never do anything that will undermine the peace of Ghana.” Nana Akufo-Addo remarked that “the NPP tradition has always stood for the respect for rule of law and democratic accountability where there will be freedom of speech and freedom of political association and we are happy to see a Ghana that is very much near these values.” Nana Addo was however quick to add that “under it all is one sacred principle that in a democracy, the people who cast the votes must have their voice prevail and not those who count, collate or declare it.” He said it is the voice of those who cast the votes that is sovereign in the contest of a thriving democracy and that principle, he believes, must be respected and adhered to at all times. On his part, the Secretary General of the TUC, Mr Kofi Asamoah congratulated Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP for choosing to use the democratically prescribed channel to address their grievances. He said, “Choosing to go to court with your grievances is truly a mark of maturity and on behalf of the working people, I commend you for deciding to go with the laws of Ghana and not resort to other means that have plunged other countries into confusion and civil unrest.” Mr Asamoah said “Nana Akufo-Addo’s actions have really brought out what he stood for over the years: fighting against dictatorship and military rule in order that democracy will stay in Ghana.” He said over five million people voted for Nana Akufo-Addo and that means he is a big force and nobody should take that for granted. Nana Akufo-Addo was accompanied to the meeting by his Campaign Manager, Mr Boakye Agyarko, Former Employment and Social Welfare Minister and MP for Ayawaso West Wogon, Hon. Akusua Fremah, NPP Director of Communications and MP for Okaikoi South, Nana Akomeah, Head of NPP’s Legal Team, Gloria Akuffo and Former Information Minister, Madam Oboshie Sai Coffie.
