President Akufo-Addo has paid glowing tribute to the Anthony Kobina Kurentsi Sam, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor who died on Saturday.
Describing him as a "valiant old colleague", he lauded the deceased's contribution in the affairs of the New Patriotic Party as well as in his government.
"Egya Sam to me and many, whose efforts at enforcing social distancing protocol at the Sekondi-Takoradi market were recently highly recommended by me, sadly passed away last Friday in a Covid-19 related death," the president said in his 11th address to the nation on the novel coronavirus.
The Mayor died a few weeks after his personal driver tested positive for Covid-19.
According to the presiding member of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly Kwesi Buckman, he had been receiving treatment in Accra in an undisclosed health facility when he passed away.
He told JoyNews that while on admission the deceased was never allowed to speak to anyone and that “his phones were even off.”
Mr K.K. Sam’s driver was placed in isolation after he tested positive for the coronavirus but the Mayor continued to report for work.
"May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Lord until we meet again," the president said.
