Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has commended the peaceful conduct of the Akwatia by-election, describing it as a model for future elections in Ghana.
During a visit to the constituency on Tuesday, September 2, to monitor security operations, the IGP expressed satisfaction with both security personnel and voters for maintaining a calm and orderly environment.
“Everything is going on smoothly as planned, and that is what we expect, to ensure that at the end of the day, we have a very smooth and peaceful election,” Mr. Yohuno said.
He praised the dedication of the police, noting that all regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) had been deployed to work directly with officers on the ground.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of my men. This election is such that we have all regional commanders, all POMAB members on the field, working with the personnel. Everything is going on very well,” he added.
Assuring the public of the police’s commitment to peaceful elections, the IGP stressed that incidents of electoral violence, such as those previously recorded at Ablekuma North, would not be repeated.
“Ablekuma North violence is a thing of the past. We are moving forward. This will be an election that sets the tone for future elections,” he said.
The Akwatia by-election, held across 119 polling stations with more than 50,000 registered voters, was necessitated by the passing of the constituency’s sitting Member of Parliament. The process has so far been calm, with only isolated incidents reported earlier in the day.
