To be honest, stage plays have never really tickled my fancy. As a Gen Z who grew up in the era of DVDs, I’ve always loved my movies.
Maybe it’s the fact that I get to watch it from the comfort of my home. I have no idea. But let’s just say that’s my vibe.
So when my colleague asked me to go and watch Roverman Production’s new play, Takeover, I gave all the excuses I could come up with. Of course, she rejected every single one of them to my dismay.
It was obviously time for me to break my record of never watching a stage play, so I grudgingly dragged myself to the National Theater after work that rainy Wednesday to watch my first play.
Arriving at the venue for the dress and technical rehearsal, I was only interested in getting the job done. Yes, this felt like a task and I was determined to treat it as such.
But as they say, ‘you never know, until you try’, because I was blown away. It was a night of laughter and fulfilment I must say.
I caught myself several times during the performance sitting at the edge of my seat. I couldn’t believe what I’ve been missing all this while.
I was mesmerized and impressed. But guess what, it wasn’t only me enjoying the show. The over 300 individuals who trooped to the venue to watch the show that evening were equally happy with the performance.
Takeover is that perfect romcom that you watch and can’t get enough of.
It is intriguing how the author entwines mental health with religion, romance, and most importantly comedy. Even though it is his 57th play, Uncle Ebo Whyte, the author of the play, acknowledged the challenges the team faces during each production.
Delivering his 'Food for Thought' on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Whyte commended his team for their commitment.
“When we started putting together 'Takeover', at a point it seemed like we didn’t know what we were doing. But we pushed through it and here we are,” he said.
For a first-timer, Takeover by Uncle Ebo Whyte’s Roverman Production is for me a perfect icebreaker.
So if you’ve never watched a stage play, I will encourage you to grab your ticket and give yourself a treat.
If you’re already a lover of stage performance, why stop now? Takeover will only deepen your love for this art that seems to be disappearing from Ghana’s entertainment industry.
Takeover is being performed on July 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14. Friday’s show is at 7 pm. Saturdays are scheduled for 4 pm and 8 pm. Three shows will be performed on Sundays at 1 pm, 4 pm, and 8 pm.
