Angry residents of Anyaa, a suburb of Accra, on Sunday morning clashed with officials of ABC Waste Management Company in protest at the unannounced dumping of refuse in their vicinity by the Company. Several hundreds of residents mounted road blocks amidst the burning of tires to ward off vehicles belonging to the company. The residents complained that ABC Waste Management Company started dumping refuse at an abandoned quarry site on Saturday without telling them anything. When Joy News got to the scene, residents were clustered around officials of the waste management company engaged in a heated argument. The residents later told Joy News they fear the dumping of refuse in the vicinity could negatively impact their health. “We don’t want this [refuse dump]; we have children and grandchildren,” an angry woman shouted. But, the Land Fill Supervisor for J Stanley Owusu and Co, owners of the waste management company, Osman Okyere, said although they have a permit from the AMA to dump the refuse in the vicinity, they would dialogue with the residents to resolve the matter amicably.
