National Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Christine Ansong, has commended government’s decision to compensate victims and families affected by election-related violence during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
She described the move as a “long-overdue step toward justice,” noting that several innocent citizens lost their lives or sustained injuries through no fault of their own.
“When lives are lost in the course of a democratic process, the state has a moral and constitutional duty to acknowledge and repair the harm caused. The government’s decision to compensate these families is a positive step toward national healing,” she said.
Her comments come after Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, announced that the government will compensate victims and families of those affected by electoral violence in the last two election cycles.
The Minister disclosed that a total of 15 deaths and over 40 injuries were recorded in the 2020 and 2024 polls across the country. He attributed the fatalities mainly to unprofessional conduct by some members of the police and military deployed during the elections.
Mr. Muntaka further revealed that investigations into the incidents have been concluded and reports submitted to the Attorney-General’s Department for legal and administrative action.
He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring accountability while supporting victims through compensation and rehabilitation programmes.
Ms. Ansong, who also serves as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) praised the move as one in the right direction.
“We owe it to the memories of those who died to ensure that future elections are peaceful. Democracy must never come at the price of human lives,” she stressed.
