The Electoral Commission (EC) has advised its officials to adhere to electoral laws in the ongoing limited registration exercise.
According to the EC, anyone caught violating the rules outlined for the conduct of the registration will be handed over to the police.
A press release signed by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu, on May 20, noted that during the ongoing exercise in Pusiga District in the Upper East on May 13, a temporary staff member failed to do due diligence.
The staff did not inspect Ghana Cards while registering some 17 applicants, instead chose to accept the ID numbers from party agents.
Upon investigation, the EC discovered that the numbers were fake. As such, the official was found to be complicit and was arrested by the police to aid in investigations.
The official has since been granted bail; however, the EC has relieved him of his duty.
The EC advised all staff to take cues from the event and always perform due diligence when registering individuals, or else they would be handed over to the police if found guilty.
“While the Police continue with their investigations, the Commission would like to warn all its Temporary Officials that it will not countenance the breach of its electoral laws.
“Any person found violating the laws of the Commission will be handed over to the Police and permanently blacklisted by the Commission.” portions of the release read.
Additionally, the release said 17 applicants were registered through the guarantor system.
The Commission also assured stakeholders of its commitment to conducting the voter registration exercise transparently and inclusively.
